We traveled to the north slopes of Essex Mountain to observe the Persistent Slab and Storm Slab problem. The Persistent Slab problem has been found in our area at low and mid-elevations on shady aspects harboring surface hoar, or facets, on or below a crust.
It was in a larger opening in the forest where the snow felt slightly slabbier than elsewhere. We had been skiing terrain steeper than this with no results. This area may have had a slight convexity but we skied numerous prominent convexities prior to this with no results.
