Behind the Big

Traveling around the Canyon Creek area behind Big Mountain. 2/5 and 2/6
 

• Skied a variety of terrain on numerous aspects. Skook Chutes (SW Facing 5400'-6300'), Dorothy's (S Facing 6000'-6800') and Tin Man ( S Facing 5400'-6800')

Skooks

• Generally stable riding conditions
• Some loose dry activity across many of the chutes. All activity appeared to be skier triggered. Most notable sluff managed to run approximatley 200'-300'.
• One soft slab crown observed. Appeared to be intentionally triggered by stomping near the entrance of a chute. Possibly the same wind slab reported yesterday by FAC.
• Distinct melt freeze crust 5600' and below.

Dorothys

• More stable riding conditions than Skooks (less loose dry activity), however the snow seemed to be more wind effected on these lower angle unsheltered slopes.
• Moderately stiff wind slabs forming in isolated pockets.

Tin Man

• Similar conditions to Dorothys.
• Observed cracking in stiff wind slabs near the ridgeline.
• Observed cornice erosion from atypical winds on the ridgeline.
• Best riding conditions were found in sheltered terrain near the edges of the avalanche gully.
