A snowboarder triggered an avalanche in the Haskill Slide area of Whitefish Mountain Resort on Thursday afternoon. A large explosives charge had been used the previous day in the same area in an effort to mitigate avalanche hazard and the area was closed. The avalanche appears to have started on a mid pack layer (guess who) and stepped down to the ground. The destructive force of the avalanche is rated at a D2, large enough to easily bury and kill a person. WMR Ski Patrol responded to the scene and conducted a search using transceivers, spot probing and an avalanche rescue K9 as a precaution. The search combined with the witness interview allowed patrol to call the area clear. Ski Patrol continues to do explosive work. Be respect closures.
