Untrammeled by man

Traded the sanctuary of GNP for a brief tour to an area preserved by an act of Congress in 1978. 286,700 acres comprise the Great Bear Wilderness.

• Cool air temperatures and partly cloudy skies limited surface heating and subsequent loose snow avalanches; at least for one more day.
• Large piles of wet and dry debris from 2 avalanches that ran earlier this month were observed. These slides originated on Mt Penrose and terminated just above Skiumah Lake.  No fracture lines observed. The wet debris is D 2.5 and unknown if it was a wet slab or wet loose. The dry debris was D3, a slab and occurred more recently than the wet.
