Quick Observation

A good day in the Middle Fork on St. Patrick's Day.

  • We utilized ski crampons for the initial 1000’ ascent where 2-3 inches of dry snow rested on a slick crust. That is until one broke.
  • Lucky us, we encountered BSNF professionals charging up the slope to assess the avalanche path between Wahoo and Cascadilla.
  • At midday, we observed wet-loose activity on sunny southern aspects, while shaded slopes remained cold dry soft snow.
  • We noted thin soft-slab avalanches, impressive shooting cracks, and loose slides from the weekend storm.
  • The majority of the day there was little wind but lots of sun.
  • Above 6000’, we avoided wind-affected terrain that had both wind crust and hard slabs.
  • On our descent, we skied enjoyable powder from 6500 ft to 4200 ft.
