Better than a garbage plate

I enjoyed a day off tour amongst the giants.

• In the forest, low-elevation had a supportable surface crust in the morning and late afternoon. This crust consists of a series of crusts nearly five inches thick.
• Steep open to the sky, northwest aspects had an unsupportable surface crust one inch thick at 4500 feet, tapered to eggshell thickness at 5800 feet. Below the crust was two inches of dry snow on top of a stout crust.
• North aspects open to the sky had an eggshell thick crust capping settled snow between 4500 feet and 5700 feet. Above that elevation, no crust was present.
• Up to three inches of dry snow caps the crust at upper-elevations.
• A half-dozen small wet loose slides were noted from the recent warm-up, along with a couple of old crowns, which were mostly filled in from blowing snow.
