Powder and slabs

We traveled to the Middle Fork to assess snow totals from the weekend storm and observe the effects of north and east winds on large open drainage. 

• Recent snow totals: 4 inches at 4000 feet, 6+ inches at 5000 feet, and 8 inches above 5500 feet. The latter was a guestimate due to the amount of wind affected snow.
• Blowing snow occurred at all elevations throughout our tour. Significant transport at upper elevations, with moderate transport at low and mid-elevations.
• The strong morning sunshine left a sun crust on low-elevation aspects we traveled despite cool air temperatures. 
• 2-3 natural Loose Dry slides on steep southerly mid-elevation slopes. 
• Great powder skiing in spots. Thick, difficult slabby snow in other locations.
