Skied a south facing slope East of the WMR boundary. Dug a pit at 6200' and found 135 cm of snow with a burly crust 90 cm down... the crust was close to an inch thick in places, but mostly 3/4".
Results: 6200' 22 degree South Facing Slope HS 135
ECTN 22 45 cm down (below storm slab), and we got the thick crust layer to fail with extra hard force.
Important to note that we weren't fully able to isolate the column around the crust- about 20 cm remained connected in the back during our tests. Should we have isolated the column 100% around the crust, this layer 90 cm down could have failed with hard, rather than extra hard, force.... otherwise, while skiing, we saw no signs of instability but kept our lines to 34 degrees and below. Areas along the SW facing ridge were certainly a bit wind affected and slabbed up in places from this past week's N winds.
