Quick Observation

Toured into Swan Range (Spider Bowl) to investigate wind slab formation from recent snow and wind and as well, see how persistent slab problems were trending.

  • Found approx. 5" of low density snow above sun, rain, or wind skin depending on aspect and elevation
  • S-1 to S1 snowfall noted during the morning and early afternoon with obscured skies later in the afternoon with no measureable accumulations
  • Noticable wind transport at mid and upper elevations with large wind swells noted along ridgelines
  • Moderate southwest winds with occasional strong gusts noted above 5000'
  • Stubborn wind slabs in specific terrain features noted along ridgelines from approx. 5000' to 6400'+ with minor surface cracking noted below skis and none propagating outward
  • Found two buried rain crust within top 1.5 m of snowpack along with graupel event from 1/20
  • T-day crust and 12/17 crust buried deep in the snowpack
