Quick Observation

Toured up to elevation 6205 ft in the Apgar Mountains off of the Camas Road from 0900 to 1500 on 3/7/18. No indication of cracking, settling, or whomping. Some wind transport of surface snow from the west side of the ridge to the east-facing slope, but did not seem to be creating a slab where I ski tested it. Winds WSW 5-10 with gusts to 15 at the ridge top. Surface hoar was visible on the east face of the ridge, and was larger as I climbed higher towards the top of the ridge. I was able to get an east facing cornice to break, but it did not propagate.

The only recent avalanche activity I observed was an old cornice failure above Rubideau Creek (see photo).

Dug a hasty pit around 1 meter deep at 5900' in elevation on a 28 degree NE facing slope. ECTN26, poor quality shear on faceted snow, about 30 cms down from the surface.
