Quick Observation

Toured to Paola Ridge and lapped S facing slopes from 6000'-5000'

  • Light to moderate winds present along the Middle Fork corridor (these were down-canyon, down-river). Winds were orographically driven, and atop the ridge, typical SW winds were loading typical leeward (E/N) aspects.  (???)
  • Wind transport was minimal and associated slabs were relatively soft/small, but reactive to stomping, along ridgelines in isolated locations.
  • We kept it below 6000' to avoid the penetrating SW breeze and found great riding conditions in the 32*-38* slope range. A thin wind skin (<1") was noted on S aspects.
  • No instabilities/avalanche activity observed, no formal pits dug.
  • Another cold night ahead....
