Apgar Range

Today we went into the Apgar Range to get a baseline for wet snow and assess recent wind transport. 

• 1 to 4 inches of dry snow which sits over a stack of crusts on north and east aspects. Low elevation snow became moist early in the day, but remained cold above roughly 5500'.
• We found two generations of recent wind transported snow. The most recent was reactive to a persons weight. The deeper of the two required a hard jump to initiate a failure. Below the older generation slab sits a slick melt freeze crust.
• Directly below cornices, we noticed cracking and very small slabs that we could initiate. These wind slabs didn't slide because of low slope angles. 
• Overcast skies and light to moderate winds kept loose wet avalanche hazards at bay until our departure at 230 pm. 

We skied slopes with angles up to 35 degrees in steepness.
