Today I went into the Whitefish Range with an inspiring group of motorized users for an avalanche awareness class. We traveled into Canyon Creek to work on rescue skills, analyze avalanche terrain, and discuss decision making.
- Observed 3 VERY small loose dry point releases that occurred yesterday above the road at low elevations
- We practiced test pits on a south facing slope at mid elevation. Extended column tests predominately resulted in ECTNs down 20 to 30 cms.
- We had one ECTP down 110 cm on a layer of graupel.
- We found the 12/24 and 12/31 curst layers down 170 cms. 1/3 was roughly 150 cms down.
- We noticed wind drifted snow at upper elevations along the trail.
I'm sold, I want a timbersled.
