Harvest Season

Went for a tour in the Flathead Range today. The spring corn harvest is in full swing. 

• South-facing aspects held a 4-inch surface crust that was supportable to boot and ski early in the morning. 
• Southerly facing slopes softened by 10 AM. This was the prime hour for the descent. By 1130 AM, surfaces were nearing unsupportable to ski at roughly 6000 feet.
• Got to a good vantage point and glassed around at neighboring terrain and saw no sign of recent slab avalanches.
• Observed one cornice fall that was likely a D2. 
• Dug on a south aspect at 6500 feet and found water pooling above two crusts in the pack. Both were approximately 2 to 3 feet down. I assume this is the early March AR crust.
