Rode "Beta" today. Heavy, dense snow on top of sugar snow everywhere. Didnt notice any recent avalanche activity or cracking all day. Then at the end of the day above one of "Doris Lakes" at 6600' we encountered a more extreme version of the snowpack everywhere else. Aka the stiffest slab I have ever seen mid season on top of extremely loose facets at the ground. My sled broke through the hard layer on a sidehill which immediately caused me to get stuck. Upon getting stuck I noticed ~25' long crack in the snow above me. I started investigating and was able to create another crack about 20' long above that one with just my hands. It was a short but steep section so there didnt seem to be much danger where I was. I got unstuck and we headed out for the day. On the way out it was freezing rain and windy from 5500' and down.
