Not for long on Furlong

Up and down Mt. Furlong to look for wind slabs on upper elevations slopes prone to loading from northeast and southwest winds. 

• 4" of new snow and gusty southwesterly winds that kicked up just after noon.
• Very limited drifting and wind slab development by late afternoon. Nearly all snow surfaces remained soft. 
• Older, harder slabs under the new snow were not reactive. They seemed most well developed in mid-elevation gullies that funneled upslope winds.
• Only obvious signs of unstable wind slabs were at low elevations - a shooting crack in a 6" thick soft slab at 4800 ft on the west facing side of a gully. 
• Triggered several small loose, fast-moving sluffs at low elevations. 

We skinned and skied slopes up to 40 degrees with no signs of instability except low-elevation triggered slides.
