Recent Natural Avalanche In Central Glacier Park

Day off tour on Mt. Edwards.

• We found a recent natural avalanche on a wind loaded slopes at 6,700 feet. It probably ran Saturday night or Sunday morning. See avalanche tab and photo. We may have seen 2 or 3 more, but they crowns were blown in and visibility was poor, so hard to say.
• We triggered several small loose dry avalanches while skiing steep, wind sheltered slopes.
• We got some isolated cracking in recent wind drifts. We stomped around on the hangfire from our recent avalanche and the remaining slab was stubborn.
• We could only get slabs from the Saturday night/Sunday storm to release after under-cutting them.
• We found that the previous snow surface (12/18 interface) had faceted and there's a layer of small near-surface facets under the recent storm snow. These were not reactive in our hand pits or on test slopes.
• An breakable eggsheel rain crust goes only up to 4,000'. 
• After a lot of pole probing and hand pits, the snowpack seems to still be mostly right-side up, except where the winds Saturday/Sunday stiffend slabs near ridges. We did find loose, dry, weak facets at the ground at lower and middle elvations under the recent snow. The weakest snowpack we found was at lower and middle elevations where the depth was only 1 to 2 feet, where those facets at the ground were covered over by a 4 finger hard layer of wind affected or settleing snow. We got no collapses or shooting cracks. 
• Much of the new and recent snow consisted of rimed precip particles and graupel.
• Light snowfall for several hours today, with 1-2" of new by the time we were done around 4pm.
• Light winds at ridgetops.
