Out for a hike up to Scalplock Fire Lookout in southern Glacier Park yesterday afternoon. Mostly clear skies and calm conditions. Followed the summer trail the whole way. Not much of a snowpack to speak of below 6000 feet, at least on westerly and southerly aspects. Above 6500 feet the snowpack finally starts to get deeper and varied between 1-3 feet deep around the summit near 7000 feet elevation. Tuesday's storm left about 6-8 inches of new snow. Wind loading was minimal, just a few tiny pillows on the west side of Scalplock's south ridge right below the lookout. Beneath the most recent storm snow was a thin, breakable crust, then several alternating layers of moist, facet/crust combos down to the ground.
