Quick Observation

Headed to Mt. Brown to watch for avalanche activity.

  • Surface was refrozen, temps were below freezing, and crampons were handy during the initial approach.
  • By 1000 southern aspects below 5,000 feet were thawing quickly. By 1120, mid-elevation snow surfaces were beginning to thaw.
  • Arriving at The Lookout, we observed increased Loose Wet avalanche activity, noting about a dozen D1-D2 slides and a tremendous amount roller balls on southerly aspects.
  • In sheltered, shaded terrain 3mm Surface Hoar was sitting on top of half an inch of rain crust from last Sunday.
  • Above 7000 feet the snowpack was dry and southern aspects were getting wet for the first time with roller ball activity.
  • Large, sagging cornices loom over steep slopes.
  • While descending, southern aspect conditions were definitely ripe for skier triggered wet loose avalanches.
  • By 3pm, below 5000 feet, the snowpack was thoroughly wet and ski penetration was the full depth of the snowpack.
  • We had no propagating results in two test pits on both north and south facing slopes above 7,000 feet.
  • We did not observe any collapsing in buried weak layers or slab avalanche activity.

We traveled a ridgeline with no overhead hazards and avoided slopes steeper than 30 degrees. Plenty of sunshine and wet snow!

More comments about the snowpack and weather:
Weather obs to track warming on the ascent: 10am, 4320', S aspect, HS = 40 cm, Tair = 3.5C, Tsurf = 0C, T-10 = 0C, Ski = 10 cm, Boot = 30 cm, Surf = softening wet MF, top 25 cm moist. 1125am, 6175', SW aspect, HS = 160 cm, Tair = 9C, Tsurf = 0C, T-10 = -3C, Ski = 10 cm, Boot = 35 cm, Surf = 1" MFcr, dry snow underneath. 12:40pm, 7360', SE aspect, HS = 134, Tair = 6C, Tsurf = 0C, T-10 = -3C, Ski = 15 cm, Boot = 30 cm, Surf = Moist SH on top of recent IFrc, crust breaking down in sun, dry snow under crust. Snowpack structure in 2 profiles strikingly similar: F-4F recent snow, PPgp (2/22 interface), late Jan PWL (FC on S aspect, SH on N aspect) down 90-110 cm under 1F+ slab. Hand pits to track depth of wet snow on descent: 4pm, 7300', SW aspect, 1" wet over 3" moist over dry. 410pm, 6100', SW aspect, 2" wet over 10" moist, over dry. 415pm, 5100', SW aspect, HS = 1m, isothermal, bottom half of snowpack wet DH, full depth ski pen, localized collapses in wet snow.
