Quick Observation

Traveled up to Sperry Glacier Basin to see how much snow the previous week's storm left in it's wake.

  • I was able to drop skis and put skins on at 6300' where there was 6-8 inches of snow on the trail.
  • Snow coverage increased to 10-12 inches as I neared Comeau Pass. Wind afftect was widespread above 6800'
  • Up in the basin below Gunsight Mountain (8000'), there was approx 18 inches of new snow settled in protected areas.
  • I climbed and skied the permanent snow field on Gunsight's north aspect. I dug numerous hand pits on ascent and probed to assess basic snow structure.
  • There was a 2-3 inch wind slab present across most of the slope. It was cracking under my weight during switchbacks, but was not showing much potential for propagation.
  • Probing revealed that in some places there was approx 3 feet of new snow from this fall on top of the old permanant snow from summer.
  • Aside from the shallow wind slabs mentioned prior, the snowpack generally felt dense and homogenous during probe analysis and handpits.
