Vaught happened to the cold smoke?

Decided to venture into upper elevations of Glacier Park to trade sheltered powder for big views.

• On a South/Southwest facing ascent, We found 1 inch of powder at valley bottom, 4-6 at 4500', and 14-18" of cold smoke at 6000'.
• The deep dry snow at mid elevations seemed to be composed of 5-6 inches of new from yesterday's surprise shot, and 9-12 inches of well protected/heavily faceted snow from last Monday's cold shot.
• We observed surface hoar up to 12mm in size capping the snow surface. Mostly above 5500'
• Winds from the West remained calm-light up to this point (10am). And sunshine intensity was minimal with the presence of thin clouds.
• Onward and upward, we shifted around the compass to the SE aspect.
• As we transitioned to more open alpine terrain, Monday's powder became Monday's windboard. However, Friday's powder was still very nice and mostly unaffected by wind. So we were now traveling through 2-6 inches or new snow on top of stiff windboard (pencil hard, some spots knife)
• We stopped to assess stability around 6900', SE slope, 34 degrees.
• Questionable interface identifyed 14 inches below the surface. Monday's hard slab was 10 inches thick here and underneath was a 5 inch thick layer of 1F faceted grains.
• Test results produced ECTN21, ECTN23. On the underside on Monday's slab.
• We decided to move forward cautiously.
• We made the rest of our ascent to 8789' traveling on pretty consistent conditions. Windboard with a skiff of joy on top.
• Enjoyed excellent views of impressive and abundant avalanche terrain, but no major recent avalanches were observed.
• Winds were calm, light during our climb, but on the summit, were constantly cranking 20-25+ from the WNW @ 2-3pm.
• We descended SE facing to 5600' @3pm. Surface snow remained dry top to bottom on this aspect, despite ample sunshine.
• Sloughing occured on steep slopes, but no other instabilities observed.
• Surface hoar still present at 330pm, but most grains were knocked over and laying flat.
• As we made our way back to the South/Southwest side, we wondered if the filtered sunshine and cool temps from the day preserved the angelic powder that we saw in the morning...
• It...didn't last. We found that both the sun and wind had their way with it. Not ruined, but nowhere near as prime as it was. Would expect a thin suncrust tomorrow.
• We triggered one small D1 wet loose around 4500'. About 4 inches deep, 15 feet wide, running 40 feet.
