Quick Observation

We traveled into the Skiumah drainage to catalog avalanche activity associated with the 1/12-13 Pineapple Express.

  • There was no shortage of debris to gawk at in this impressive basin. In fact, the breadth of debris shut down our plans to climb into the upper basin. That was just fine, as there was plenty of mouth-watering treats to keep the three of us lookie-loos occupied.
  • Of the visible terrain, most of the debris noted was on northerlies with limited activity on southerlies. We found this interesting because we observed the exact opposite in the drainage immediately to the east, Rescue Creek, a few days prior.
  • It appeared that paths ran multiple times during the storm. Large piles of dry debris ran during the early part of the storm. These were dwarfed by wet debris, which slid during the latter part of the storm. We observed a handful of crowns, many of which had blown in from wind transport. Most of these were mid-slope, with one at the top of a path that nearly went wall to wall beneath Mt. Penrose.
  • We conservatively noted 3 D3+ slides and 10 D2+.
  • The avalanche tab will be filled out in the morning.
