Snowpit Observations
More detailed information about the snowpack:

We dug a hasty pit on a 32 degree S/SE aspect at ~7250ft near the Mount Brown Fire Lookout in Glacier National Park. The snowpack was 120cm deep in this location. The bottom 20cm was composed of weak faceted snow (1F-4F) with a noticable rain crust on top. The middle 95cm was relatively homogeous, being composed of rounding facets and faceting rounds (1F-P). It was difficult to identify any distinct interfaces within this middle pack. We found no sudden desity shifts. The top 5cm of the pack contained a distinct meltfreeze sun crust with near surface faceting underneath the crust. This is a result of the warm sunny weather above 4000ft the past few days, followed by cool nights. This did not pose an immediate threat to us, but once this is burried, it could become a problematic interface below our next storm slab. Our stability tests produced no sudden failures or clean shearing, but were able to initiate a failure near the ground with hard force (CT 23-25) This produced an irregular failure plane (Q3).The snowpack seemed relatively stable on this aspect, however we opted for low-angle terrain on the descent, because we spent too much time up at the lookout and the warming temps were rapidly weakening the upper pack. We observed countless roller balls and lots of distant wet and loose point release avalache activity on steep rocky slopes of the surrounding peaks. We also observed 2-3 ski tracks down the S/SE face of Stanton Peak across the valley. We did not observe any small avalanches triggered by these tracks. On our descent we noticed a distinct difference in the snow below the inversion. Being significantly colder, low density, and cohesionless powder still.Overall, things are shaping up pretty good out there! Great skiing.
