Snowpit Observations
More detailed information about the snowpack: 

Dug a pit on a west aspect 30 meters below the ridgeline in a sheltered area on a 40 degree slope.  Total snowpack depth 190cm. Found relatively stable conditions despite the 20cm of medium density snow that fell the previous night. Ski penetration 30-40cm boot penetration 60-70cm. Found a pencil hard ice crust approximately 5cm thick 60cm below the surface and another pencil hard ice crust 5cm thick 130 cm below the surface. We were not surprised to see our compression test fail on this upper ice layer, and we were pleased to see no propogation in our extended column test.
